Archaeological excavations in advance of quarrying revealed several clusters of late Mesolithic and early Neolithic pits containing deliberately broken carinated pottery vessels, and fragments of a polished stone axe from Cumbria and pitchstone flakes from Arran, interpreted altogether as the aftermath of feasting events in the early fourth millennium BC.
